'Peace Breaking Out' Index: IDF implores gov't not to widen 'ceasefire' to West Bank

V/O (1940's-style radio announcer): "And here's the latest 'Peace Breaking Out' Index for Sunday morning, December 3rd – exactly a week into the reputed ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
The Jerusalem Post reports that Palestinians in Gaza fired a Kassam rocket into the western Negev early Sunday morning, with the projectile hitting near Kibbutz Kfar Aza. There were no injuries or damage in the attack. This was the seventh such attack since the so-called truce came into effect. The army has been instructed not to respond to any of the rocket strikes.
The security cabinet was to hold a debate Sunday on whether to expand the Gaza Strip cease-fire to the West Bank, with senior security officials warning that such a move could lead to a spike in terrorism.MSNBC gives a chilling close-up view of continuing war preparations deep within southern Gaza:To back their argument that continued IDF activity was necessary in the West Bank, senior IDF sources in the Central Command said that last week alone Palestinians tried smuggling some 10 pipe bombs out of Nablus through the Hawara Checkpoint, south of the city.
"The terror here never stops and only grows," one officer said of the West Bank. "The only way to keep it under control is by retaining our presence in the territory."
There were 287 terror attacks including shootings, Kassam rocket attacks, stabbings and roadside bombs in November, in comparison to 172 in October, 115 in September and 151 in August, according to statistics released by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center at the Center for Special Studies.

"A hitherto unknown group calling itself the Just Swords of Islam issued a warning to Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip over the weekend that they must wear the hijab or face being targeted by the group’s members.
The group said its followers last week threw acid at the face of a young woman who was dressed “immodestly” in the center of Gaza City. They also destroyed a car belonging to a young man who was playing his radio tape too loudly.
In a related story, Haaretz notes that police arrested a left-wing activist during a rally held in Tel Aviv Saturday night against what protesters dubbed Israel's "siege" of Gaza.
There were no reports of the Tel Aviv rally's marchers protesting the extremists' violence against the Gazan civilians, or military preparations against Israeli civilians, as noted in the MSNBC report.

Egyptian Sinai manhunt after Palestinian terror cell (UPDATED)
Egyptian security forces are in what is being described as an intensive manhunt after a Palestinian terror cell from Gaza that is planning to carry out an attack on Israeli tourists in the Sinai Peninsula.
Israeli security officials are urging Israeli tourists to leave Sinai immediately.
The Egyptians have been pursuing the cell, which reportedly numbers at least four to five members, for the last five days.

When ATM's talk, your money walks: Israeli researchers
A group of researchers at Algorithmic Research (ARX), an Israeli security firm, published a paper two weeks ago describing a very serious flaw inherent in most ATMs. Apparently, between the time that you input your PIN and the time that the machine spits out your cash, a dataset containing your PIN and account number is encrypted and decrypted a few times while being routed along the banking network -- and somewhere along that point, it's conceivable that those numbers could be intercepted.

Terror busters mix motorcycles and swagger
Jerusalem - What looms suddenly in your rearview mirror and is past you in a streak on the stone slip of a darkened street is crime-fighting Israeli-style: two men, dressed in black, bent low on a dark motorcycle, the one behind with his automatic rifle angled off his back, the bike darting quick as a bat.
A moment later up ahead, near the Ben Yehuda shopping area in the center of Jerusalem, a man is up against a wall, dressed in clothes that resemble what a Hasidic Jew would wear, but in a faintly raffish way that doesn't quite square with the sober probity of Hasidism. The backseat rider from the motorcycle is frisking him; the driver, still atop his bike, is reaching for the man's identification.
The man is eventually let go but not before he is closely questioned. He has just had his first, and he hopes his last, brush with the motorcycle unit of Yasam, an elite police unit.

'Peace breaking out' index: Rice praises leaders as Navy foils possible seaborne attack

V/O (1940's-style radio announcer): "And here's the latest 'Peace breaking out' index for Thursday evening, November 30th – four days into the reputed ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
Debka File leads with a update that the Israeli Navy interdicted a Palestinian vessel from Gaza loitering near Ashkelon's offshore oil terminal. The Israeli crew stopped the boat “after a chase and exchange of fire outside the limits set for Palestinian fishing boats. Security authorities seek to establish if the boat was bound for a sabotage operation against Israel’s key oil installations.”
Meanwhile, The Jerusalem Post reports:
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice praised Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for his speech earlier this week, saying that his call for a renewal of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations was an important step that was likely to both contribute towards calm and advance the peace processes in the region.
And Haaretz adds:
Speaking a press conference with Abbas in Jericho hours earlier, Rice said that Washington wanted to "intensify our efforts" to renew the peace process. She said that the U.S. has made clear it expects a viable, contiguous Palestinian state when it is created, and that no actions should be taken now to prejudge the outcome of a final peace agreement.
She added that the U.S. is interested in seeing Palestinian Authority reforms of its security services and political institutions.
Meanwhile, Abbas told reporters that talks on a unity government with the ruling Hamas organization had reached a "dead end."
Ynet News warns, however, that all the international and local good will and backslapping/stabbing haven't stopped Palestinian in Gaza from continuing to smuggle in weaponry from Egypt:
Knesset members, military officials warn 'truce' damaging Israel's security; Popular Resistance Committees: Ceasefire offers a period of calm for our fighters to recover and prepare for our final goal of evacuating Palestine
"It's business as usual," said a Palestinian security official in Gaza. "Nothing out of the ordinary as far as smuggling. Not a massive amount, just the normal routine amount."
"We will keep fighting (Israel), but for the moment we will postpone certain parts of the military struggle," said Abu Abir. "We will reinforce very quickly and rush what we are doing to prepare (for attacks against Israel) in Gaza and in the West Bank."
Abu Abdullah, a senior leader of Hamas' so-called "military wing," told WND Hamas agreed to the ceasefire "because we need a period of calm to recuperate. This lull in fighting will not bring us to speak about peace."

Anyone at all familiar with the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling knows "the Night Bus." Israel's Egged bus line has its very own version of the Night Bus, albeit it has no shrunken heads, doesn't physically shrink and has no beds. Read it all.

This week would have been my daughter's 21st birthday.
She won't be here to celebrate it, though. Five years ago, a Palestinian terrorist ended my Malki's life while she stood in line in the Sbarro pizza restaurant in the center of Jerusalem. Fourteen other innocent Israelis, including seven children, perished with her. One family was decimated - both parents and three of their eight children died.
That terror bombing elicited responses from leaders around the world. But not many. And certainly nowhere near as many as Israel's November 8th attack on Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip. That misfired artillery shell has unleashed a torrent of anti-Israel rhetoric both within Israel and beyond. After the first 24 hours, it drew 2,026 articles on Google. Fifty Sri Lankan civilians were killed in another artillery shelling that same day. By comparison, only 141 stories reported on their deaths.

Breakfast in the Dan Panorama Hotel, Jerusalem. Tables groan under the weight of endless plates and baskets of food. An American group of Christians sit together, clasp hands, say a prayer to Jesus and dig in. The women all wear ankle-length L.L. Bean style dresses with neat little capelets over their chests, and fabulous stiff white translucent bonnets on their heads. Hair is uniformly swept back into a tight, severe bun. Think of your 19th century local school marm. The men wear jeans and plaid shirts. They have beards without mustaches--Amish style. I learn that the men work in trades: carpenters, shoemakers, garage door installers, "honest labor."
"I'm Bother Peter."
"Are you Mennonites?"
"No, we are The Old German Brotherhood. And you are an Orthodox Jew. I can tell by your black beanie."
